How did Salmon Arm get it's name?

Nestled in the heart of British Columbia's renowned Shuswap Lake recreation area lies Salmon Arm, the Northern Gateway to the Okanagan. Positioned on the southern shores of Shuswap Lake and conveniently situated between Calgary and Vancouver, Salmon Arm stands as the largest town in the Shuswap region.

The valley welcomed its first white settlers in 1888, with Salmon Arm originating as a railway camp during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). Over time, it evolved into a thriving hub for logging, farming, and dairy activities.

Surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, pristine waterways, provincial parks, and abundant green spaces, Salmon Arm has become a rapidly growing tourism destination. The town enjoys a mild and distinct four-season climate, providing superior year-round recreational amenities. Salmon Arm proudly showcases diverse art and craftwork, including selections from the aboriginal cultures.

The enchanting Shuswap Lake draws its name from the Shuswap Indians, one of the largest tribes in the interior of British Columbia. The region, once home to over 5,000 fishermen and hunters, has retained its unique rural quality. Salmon Arm, named after the southwest arm of Shuswap Lake, recalls the historic salmon runs that enriched the creeks flowing into the lake.

Maintaining a distinct rural charm, the Shuswap area features communities that reflect the richness and diversity of the region. Residents take pride in preserving their quality of life, creating a harmonious balance that captivates both residents and visitors.

Salmon Arm's economy reflects diversity, encompassing forestry, agriculture, tourism commerce, and manufacturing. The growing trend of agri-tourism in the area encompasses wineries, berry farms, orchards, cheese plants, dairy farms, corn fields, pumpkin and gourd patches, canning and cider pressing, petting zoos, and much more.

Love where you live.
